With the rapid advancement of smart technologies, artificial intelligence is making significant inroads into the healthcare industry. On December 4th, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital and Tencent Corporation officially launched the "Artificial Intelligence Medical Joint Laboratory" in Hangzhou, aiming to leverage Tencent's "Yingying" AI platform for innovative research and practical applications in the medical field. This collaboration marks a major step forward in integrating AI into clinical settings.
One of the key achievements of this partnership is the development of an AI-powered system that can diagnose esophageal cancer through endoscopy in under four seconds, thanks to advanced image recognition technology. This breakthrough not only speeds up the diagnostic process but also enhances accuracy, offering a powerful tool for early detection and treatment planning.
Tencent Yingying is the company’s first AI product designed specifically for the medical sector. It utilizes computer vision and deep learning to analyze various types of medical images, assisting doctors in diagnosing conditions such as esophageal cancer, lung nodules, diabetic retinopathy, cervical cancer, and breast cancer. By supporting early screening and diagnosis, this technology has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes.
In addition to research and development, the collaboration also includes efforts to streamline hospital operations and enhance patient experience. Working with Zhuojian Technology, the two organizations are introducing online medical payment services like WeChat-based insurance payments and new rural cooperative medical insurance. These initiatives aim to boost operational efficiency and create a more seamless, user-friendly healthcare environment.
Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, one of the largest comprehensive tertiary hospitals in the province, is at the forefront of this transformation. Alongside four affiliated hospitals and several community health centers, the hospital has established the "Tencent Internet + Medical Big Data Research and Demonstration Base." This initiative focuses on applying AI in diagnostic support and bringing Tencent Yingying to the Zhejiang region.
Currently, the hospital has already implemented early-stage esophageal cancer screening using Tencent Yingying, and is expanding its research into areas like diabetic retinopathy. Looking ahead, the goal is to use AI to assist in the screening of a wide range of diseases, further enhancing the capabilities of the healthcare system.
This progress aligns with the Chinese government’s "New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan," which outlines strategic goals for AI development. By 2020, the plan aims to bring China's AI technology and application to world-leading levels, making AI a key driver in improving people's quality of life.
Huang Dongsheng, president of Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital, emphasized that the integration of AI into healthcare will be a crucial direction for future medical innovation. Technologies like image recognition, big data analysis, and deep learning have great potential in medical diagnosis and treatment. Currently, AI is entering the preclinical stage of early cancer screening, signaling a new era in precision medicine.
Chang Jia, director of Tencent's Internet + Medical division, added that AI is a foundational technology that is open and accessible. With the establishment of the joint laboratory, the team plans to explore AI applications in medical insurance and user services, striving to build a comprehensive AI-driven healthcare ecosystem.
