With the rapid advancement of smart technologies, artificial intelligence is increasingly making its way into industrial applications, especially in the healthcare sector. On December 4, Zhejiang Provincial People's Hospital and Tencent Corporation officially launched the "Artificial Intelligence Medical Joint Laboratory" in Hangzhou. This collaboration aims to leverage Tencent's "Yingying" AI platform to explore new frontiers in AI-driven medical research and practical applications. For instance, using intelligent image recognition technology, an esophageal cancer endoscopy can now be diagnosed in under four seconds.
Tencent's "Yingying" marks the company's first foray into applying artificial intelligence in the medical field. It utilizes computer vision and deep learning techniques to analyze a wide range of medical images, significantly assisting doctors in diagnosing and screening conditions such as esophageal cancer, lung nodules, diabetic retinopathy, cervical cancer, and breast cancer.
In addition to research, the partnership will also work with Zhuojian Technology to introduce online medical payment services like WeChat-based insurance and rural medical payments. These initiatives aim to improve hospital efficiency, enhance patient experience, and establish a benchmark for "Internet + Smart Hospitals."
Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital, one of the largest comprehensive tertiary hospitals in Zhejiang, has joined the "Artificial Intelligence Medical Joint Laboratory." Alongside four affiliated hospitals and several community health centers, the hospital has also set up the "Tencent Internet + Medical Big Data Research and Demonstration Base." This initiative focuses on developing AI applications in diagnosis and treatment, helping to bring "Yingying" into practice within the province.
Currently, the hospital has already implemented "Yingying" for early esophageal cancer screening and is conducting research on diabetic retinopathy. In the future, the hospital plans to expand AI use for the screening of various other diseases.
In July this year, the State Council released the "New Generation Artificial Intelligence Development Plan," outlining strategic goals for the next three steps. The plan emphasizes that by 2020, China’s AI technology and application should reach world-class levels, with AI becoming a key tool in improving people’s quality of life.
Huang Dongsheng, president of Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital, stated that the integration of AI and healthcare is a major direction for future medical innovation. Technologies like image recognition, big data processing, and deep learning have significant potential in medical diagnosis and treatment. Currently, AI is entering the preclinical stage of early cancer detection.
Chang Jia, director of Tencent’s Internet + Medical division, added: “AI is a grassroots technology that is open and accessible. After establishing the joint laboratory, we will continue to explore AI applications in medical insurance and user services, aiming to build an AI-powered medical service ecosystem.â€
