Foreword: The Spiritual Choice between Birth and WTO Entry
There is a contradiction between the reality of society and the value aspiration of the individual. It is reflected in Chinese intellectuals: the “appropriate smugness†brought about by academic achievement has led to excessive accession to the WTO, which has led to the “materialization tendency†of people after frequent contact with the society, which in turn makes people face the stagnation of academic research. Even when it was abandoned, it caused mental anxiety and division.
Since ancient times, Chinese intellectuals have been making choices between birth and WTO. Tao Yuanming gave up the interest and concern, and in exchange for the Antai and Qingxu of his own soul, this is a choice. But can the quiet space bring the spiritual comfort of the ideal? Keeping the distance from reality, can it help the individual's spiritual refinement and value embodiment? However, Cui Wei did not give up his research on architectural design. He said: "I feel that my creative activities in recent years are basically self-sacrificing, and there is less time for thinking and learning. This is really miserable. At the same time, for the hospital. I have to bring a group of experts, but also to train graduate students, but also to undertake projects. This state makes my initiative in creation not strong. Part I: Studio
Reporter: What is the main job after the establishment of the studio?
Cui Wei: Now the three studios have not been formally established, and there is still no clear division in the profession. I have been responsible for the work of the in-house program team since 1997. From last year, I grew up from four people to nearly 20 people. After setting up the studio, in order to control the scale, the number of personnel will be reduced. On the one hand, my work participates in some design competitions like the original program group. On the other hand, there are many projects that are commissioned to the door. If time permits, we will implement some construction projects for some of the academic projects. Others are only for the previous design, and the rest will work with the relevant design units.
We will also go out and take a look at it, especially when we look at traditional Chinese architecture and historical heritage, and even go abroad to inspect and observe. For the compound, the studio hopes to take the lead in academics. Although it is not a substitute for the entire compound, as a dynamic creative research institution, its influence should include academic exchanges, and we hope to be helpful to the hospital or the entire industry.
Reporter: What is the difference between the current studio and the previous design compared with before the restructuring?
Cui Wei: The difference is not very big to me. The main reason is that in recent years, in the aspect of architectural creation, including the architectural professional departments in the courtyard and the leaders at all levels have given great support and the creative environment is good. The flaw is that there are too many projects and they should not be overwhelmed. After the establishment of this studio, we will selectively do some projects according to our own abilities and time schedule. I can't do all the competitions as I did before, and then I will host these projects after the results of the competition and some of the commissioned projects are assigned to the various design offices. My ideal plan is to set up this studio as the main project, and other projects to give full play to the enthusiasm of other architects in the courtyard, so that everyone can do more projects and have more works.
In the past few years, I have worked on the design of the Institute's program team on the one hand, and on the other hand, trained a group of people. These people now have important creative work in the main departments of the hospital. So in the work of the studio, the architects in the old scheme group can help me pick the burden and be alone. For me, it is an invaluable breathing opportunity. At the same time, I can use this opportunity to carry out some research and think about it. Otherwise, I will be exhausted.
I hope that after setting up the studio, I can concentrate on playing the key battles. Of course, the concepts of the key points are different. Some focus on some of the larger projects, but there are also some small and medium-sized projects or even very small projects. If it has a cultural aspect, we will also focus on it.
Reporter: What are the plans for the composition and matching of the studio staff? What is the consideration?
Cui Wei: Our team is being formed, and the personnel have not yet implemented it. Since I originally designed the competition in the program group, most of the architects I brought were newly graduated students and had no experience. In that case, the echelon gap is very large, and we can discuss it together in conceptual design, but there are various shortcomings when the design is implemented, because we don't have a professional architect who can do the project responsibly.
I will try to avoid this problem in the current studio. Many people think that I will choose the architect with the most creative passion, but it is not. I hope that passionate architects will play their role by themselves, but I would like to use architects with rich engineering experience to have one or two people to be my partner. This will help me implement the project when I am busy. At the same time, my studio needs an architect like a chief engineer to be able to undertake the entire process from start to finish, including construction drawings and process drawings. Every step is very important for a creative process. I used to care about different things at different stages. I will be responsible for it in the future. This situation will improve.
I will also join a few young architects who have a younger generation, have a promising future and potential for development, and my graduate students to join this studio. In this part of graduate school, I don't want to be a pure designer, but a new force in related research at work. I will ask my students to read more books, study more in the culture, think more, and make the concept clearer and more open. This is also an important part of the studio. In terms of the number of people, the initial idea is probably less than ten people, which is easier to communicate and manage. At the same time, our three expert design studios will have a lot of coordination and sharing. Everyone has different projects and research directions, and mutual communication is also very important.
