In the field of organic light-emitting diodes, white light emission is realized, and color regulation of devices due to different service life of different types of light-emitting layers is a common problem in the industry. Huang Weiyang, a professor of the Department of Chemistry at the University of Hong Kong, used phosphorescent materials instead of traditional fluorescent materials to emit white light, which not only improved the energy conversion efficiency of organic light-emitting diodes, but also simplified the device fabrication process and reduced the manufacturing cost.
Single layer white OLED
“Traditional white light is produced by a combination of red, green and blue light materials, but my research is to use a combination of blue and orange or blue and yellow to make a two-layer white OLED.†This process not only reduces the production floor. The required materials also increase the energy conversion efficiency of conventional fluorescence from 25% to 100%.
On this basis, Prof. Huang's research team further innovated and proposed a new theory of phosphor color luminescence color adjustment, and developed a single-layer white organic light-emitting diode. “The most important thing in making OLED lamps is color control, energy conversion efficiency and their lifetime.†He revealed that his team developed a technology that combines blue plus orange or blue plus yellow to make a single-layer organic light-emitting diode.
Reduce costs by a third
“This method does not require three colors, that is, three materials are not needed, and the cost can be reduced by about one-third. The process of production is also simplified accordingly.†Huang Weiyang explained that the more layers needed to make an organic light-emitting diode The more factors that need to be considered, the more complex. The key is that the surface chemical reaction between each layer is very complicated, directly affecting the final luminescent properties of the OLED. “Single-layer organic light-emitting diodes also simplify the fabrication process, and can be used to fabricate white-light OLED devices using inkjet-like printing technology, which is beneficial for making large-area white OLEDs.â€
However, the technology has not yet entered the practical application stage. Professor Huang pointed out that the energy conversion efficiency of multi-layer white light organic light-emitting diodes has exceeded that of fluorescent lamps. As for the single-layer OLED, Huang Weiyang said that in 2009 he published the first article on single-layer OLED materials. The energy conversion efficiency at that time was far from the conversion efficiency of fluorescent lamps. Until 2013, its energy conversion efficiency only slightly exceeded the lowest energy conversion efficiency of conventional fluorescent lamps. He hopes that the white light illumination system made by organic light-emitting diodes in the future can compete with fluorescent lamps.
Professor Huang Weiyang of Hong Kong Baptist University, recently developed a single-layer white organic light-emitting diode (OLED) with its new metal-organic phosphorescent materials, and won the second prize of the National Natural Science.
