STMicroelectronics Announces Robust and Reliable USB Type-CTM Controller

Built-in protection mechanism saves space and improves operational safety

China, July 10, 2017 - STMicroelectronics introduced two new USB Type-CTM standard certified port controller chips. New product built-in protection circuitry helps designers achieve cost-effective interfaces that support USB functional integration requirements, including Power Negotiation, Managed Active Cables, and GuestProtocols (External Device Protocol Support) ).

The USB Type-CTM standard stipulates that cables can be plugged in and out, making interconnection of various devices easier. The Type-CTM interface also supports all USB functions, including 480Mbps USB 2.0 and 10Gbps USB 3.1 data transmission; 5V/0.5A, up to 20V/5.0A power supply; Managed Active Cables active cable management with extended connection distance; The cable transmits alternate modes of other protocol signals such as HDMI or DisplayPort. It makes it easier to connect users, ensuring that each line is connected correctly and requires more complex interface components. In addition, the 20V maximum bus voltage (VBUS) of the power supply function requires additional circuitry to protect the low voltage circuitry.

ST's new control chip simplifies the designer's product choices, one for the downstream port (DFP) dedicated control chip and the other for the dual role port (DRP) controller, which can be used to control the downstream port (DFP). It can also be used to control the uplink port (UFP). Both new products support Type-C cable connections and interface orientation detection. The operating voltage range is 3V to 22V, eliminating the need for an external voltage regulator. This reduces component count and saves board space.

Using ST's high-performance analog CMOS process, the new USB Type-CTM controller combines the advantages of low power consumption with robustness and high voltage. The CC line overvoltage protection is up to 22V, and the high voltage pin is up to 28V. If the VBUS is accidentally shorted, the overvoltage protection mechanism can prevent the circuit from burning. There is also a single discharge circuit on the VBUS and VCONN power lines that allows the user to safely pull out the cable.

The STUSB4710 DFP controller is primarily used for power supply terminals such as AC power adapters, power supplies, USB HUB splitters, charging docks , smart plugs and displays. The chip integrates all the circuitry needed to charge the connected device and supports up to five Power Delivery Profiles. With internal non-volatile memory, all parameters can be customized to handle the entire connection process without external CPU intervention, so it can be used directly without additional hardware and software. In the case of multi-port applications (for example, a four-way four-way splitter), multiple STUSB4710 chips can be connected to a microcontroller (MCU) via an I2C interface to implement a power allocation algorithm.

The STUSB1602 manages the USB Type- CTM port in the power supply or device. On-chip configuration channel (CC) control logic manages the entire connection setup process, including selecting the VBUS default, medium current, or high current mode. In addition, the chip integrates a protected programmable 600mAVCONN power switch to support accessories and active cables. The STUSB1602 also implements a USB PD physical layer (including dual-phase tagged coded IP) that supports the transmit software stack implemented by an external microcontroller. The hardware and software are authenticated by the USB PD2.0 power receiving end and the power supply end. In addition, the product is compatible with USB PD3.0 core features and most options. The STUSB1602 supports accessory mode and battery no power mode.

The product is available in a 4mm x 4mm QFN24 package.

The STUSB1602 evaluation board (P-NUCLEO-USB002) includes an STM32F0 microcontroller and a type-C cable.

The STUSB4710 evaluation board (STEVAL-ISC003V1) has a built-in DC/DC converter.
