Global Network Science and Technology Report Last week, Alibaba Cloud sparked attention due to a social media post. What exactly is the "groundbreaking AI" that was mentioned on Weibo?

The answer came to light on December 20. At the Yunqi Conference and Beijing Summit, Alibaba Cloud officially launched the ET Brain—a powerful AI platform integrating global capabilities in urban management, industrial optimization, healthcare support, environmental governance, and air traffic scheduling. This marked a major step in their broader industrial AI strategy. Alongside the launch, Alibaba Cloud also unveiled the official logo of the ET Brain for the first time.

According to Wan Wanli, Alibaba Cloud’s Chief Intelligence Scientist, “A year ago, we introduced Alibaba Cloud’s Artificial Intelligence ET in Beijing. Since then, we have upgraded ET from a single skillset into an intelligent ET Brain, becoming a pioneer in global industrial AI.”

Unlike other AI systems, the ET Brain combines cutting-edge AI technologies, cloud computing, big data, and deep domain knowledge. Built on a brain-like neural network architecture and fuzzy cognitive inversion theory, it enables single-point intelligence while supporting multi-body intelligence. This allows for real-time decision-making, multi-dimensional perception, global insight, and continuous evolution—key features that make it unique.

The ET Brain logo itself reflects this vision. It features a simple hexagon with a dot, inspired by the colored thermograms of different parts of the human brain. The AI character derived from the logo, “Little ET,” has a clever and lively personality. Its dot lines form a neural network pattern, symbolizing the integration of various AI technologies, while the polygonal surface can change dynamically, representing ongoing technological evolution.

In practice, the ET Brain has already made a significant impact across industries. For example, the ET City Brain reduced travel time in Hangzhou by 15.3% and saved 4.6 minutes on elevated road transit. It can automatically create green corridors for ambulances, cutting response times in half. In Suzhou, it improved bus traffic by up to 17%.

The ET Industrial Brain has also been successfully implemented in manufacturing. It has addressed critical issues such as yield improvement and failure prediction, and has been deployed in five key industries, including solar energy, rubber, and power. Companies like GCL Solar, Zhongce Rubber, Trina Solar, and Dunan New Energy have seen billions in additional profits. In one case, Alibaba Cloud's ET Industrial Brain helped Trina Solar increase its battery A product rate by 7%, marking the first IT service model that pays based on results.

Alibaba Cloud has also announced the “Maxima Project” around the ET Brain, aiming to recruit top global AI partners to build and expand the platform. Over 110,000 developers from the Tianchi platform will join the initiative, helping to solve industry-specific challenges.

Beyond driving industrial growth, the ET Brain is also creating new opportunities for global technological innovation. Recently, the ET City Brain was selected as one of China’s four major AI open innovation platforms, allowing research institutions to participate in AI development. As Qian Wanli stated, “The moon landing program of the 1960s led to breakthroughs in communication and bioengineering. Today, we have unprecedented computing power and data processing capabilities. The ET Brain could become the most important AI research platform in the next decade, just like the moon landing did.”
