Changing the route Apple HomePod did not intend to join the voice assistant
In a fascinating turn of events this year, the once quiet audio industry has become remarkably active. The big four—Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Apple—have either launched their own smart speaker products independently or collaborated in some cases.
Apple had previously announced its HomePod speaker, but it wasn't officially released until 2018. Despite its impressive sound quality, the integration of Siri, the voice assistant, didn’t meet expectations. While users praised its audio performance, other features were considered rather basic.
According to internal sources, Apple had been working on the HomePod as early as 2012, but at the time, the company viewed it primarily as a high-quality speaker, not as a smart device with voice control capabilities. This explains why its sound quality is so exceptional.
Additionally, a report suggested that the HomePod's voice recognition technology was based on Beats' innovations, allowing it to pick up commands clearly even in noisy environments or from another room. However, despite these capabilities, the smart speaker could only handle simple commands. The Siri experience on the HomePod was also reportedly less advanced than on iPhones.
This has left many Apple fans feeling disappointed. Tim Cook himself acknowledged that Apple’s product development often starts much earlier than people realize. However, in the case of smart speakers, Apple seems to have lagged behind its competitors. Despite its strong brand and reputation, the company is now playing catch-up in this fast-evolving market.
