According to the LilipuTIng website, Google Android 7.1 has a built-in virtual reality mode called Daydream, but not every Android 7.1 phone supports it.

Virtual reality, google, daydream

While we know that Google Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones support the Daydream platform, most older phones don't support it, including the Nexus 6P and Nexus 5X released last year, and almost all phones before the Daydream VR platform was released earlier this year. Asus and ZTE say their flagship models are compatible with Daydream, but they have not been confirmed by Google. However, Google disclosed a list of smartphone requirements that support Daydream.

LilipuTIng said that Google released the Android 7.0 compatibility definition document this week, setting out Google's detailed requirements for pre-installed Google Play Store and other apps. Although Android is open source software, Google Apps is not. If you want to pre-install Play Store, YouTube, Gmail, and other core apps on your phone, device vendors need to follow Google’s license terms. Section 7.9 of the document relates to virtual reality, and Section 7.9.2 describes the requirements for supporting Daydream phones.

The following are the main requirements:

• The screen size must be between 4.7-6 inches. • A display with 1080p or higher resolution is required. A 1440p or higher resolution display is highly recommended.

• The display refresh rate is no less than 60Hz in VR mode. • The display gray-grey, white-black, and black-white switching delay times cannot be longer than 3 milliseconds.

• The display afterglow time cannot be longer than 5 milliseconds. • The device must have at least 2 physical cores integrated, one of which is fully used for foreground applications in virtual reality mode. • Bluetooth 4.2

• OpenGL ES 3.2• Must support Vulkan Hardware Level 0, and Vulkan Hardware Level 1 is recommended. • Can decode video at 30 frames per second and 3840 x 2160 resolution. LilipuTIng said that other requirements are related to performance.

For example, the GPU and display must be able to synchronize access to the pre-buffer, ensuring that no visible tearing occurs when displaying virtual reality content.

Since these features are usually not printed on the box, the user must wait for the phone manufacturer or Google to declare that the phone supports Daydream. Currently, the only mobile phone that is officially confirmed to support Daydream is the Pixel phone.
