In addition to formaldehyde? Industrial grade? Net red? These empty net pass rates are actually 0
In the past two years, annual air purifier sales have hovered around 6 million units. Among these, a product known as FFU (Fan Filter Unit) has gained significant popularity on e-commerce platforms. Recently, the Shanghai Quality Supervision Bureau commissioned the Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association to conduct an investigation into the quality and safety of FFU air purifiers, revealing serious risks associated with the product.
Beyond just removing formaldehyde, many online sellers are promoting industrial-grade FFU purifiers—but that’s not always the case. FFUs are typically used in industrial settings such as cleanrooms and production lines. However, on e-commerce sites, searching for "FFU" brings up nearly a thousand products, most priced between 1,500 and 2,500 yuan, with many labeled as "industrial grade." Despite their similar metallic designs and claims of superior performance, these units often lack proper certification for household use.
On one popular platform, a top-selling FFU model boasts a CADR value of over 1,000 m³/h for both PM2.5 and formaldehyde removal. It has sold over 1,100 units monthly and received more than 3,000 reviews with a 97% positive rating. However, behind the marketing lies a troubling reality.
A test conducted by the Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association sampled 13 FFU models. Only four met national standards, while the rest failed to comply. The results showed that 11 units had PM2.5 purification efficiency below 60% of their claimed values. One unit, for instance, was advertised as having a 1,200 m³/h capacity but measured only 600 m³/h—less than half the stated value.
Additionally, all 13 models claimed to remove formaldehyde, yet tests revealed that the highest measured value was only 30% of the nominal value. Nine of them fell below the detection limit, meaning they had virtually no formaldehyde removal capability.
The risk assessment also focused on safety. Unlike standard household air purifiers, which must meet strict safety requirements, the 13 FFU models tested failed all three critical safety measures: protection against touching parts, stability, and mechanical hazards. In fact, 100% of the units had exposed electrical components and moving parts that could pose serious risks, such as electric shocks or physical injury.
Experts warn that selling such industrial-grade devices to consumers is dangerous and inappropriate. The Shanghai Quality Supervision Bureau has been informed of the findings, and the results will be made public soon.
Zhu Weidong, president of the Shanghai Environmental Protection Industry Association, emphasized the need to enforce household appliance standards and prevent industrial products from being mislabeled and sold to the general public.
As consumers continue to seek better indoor air quality, it's crucial to verify the legitimacy and safety of the products being purchased. Are you using an FFU at home? It might be time to double-check its credentials.
