NEC USB 3.0 host controller dominates rivers and lakes shipments broke 30 million

Renesas Electronics, which is a merger of Renesas Technology and NEC Electronics, announced today that as of May 19, 2011, the company’s cumulative global shipments of USB 3.0 host controller chips have exceeded 30 million, and this time, It took only a year and a half before the initial mass production.

At the same time, in order to meet increasing customer orders, Renesas also announced that since June of this year, the USB 3.0 master monthly output will be increased to 6 million.

NEC Electronics joined the USB-FI organization in 1996. In April 2000, it released the world's first USB 2.0 compatible master chip, the μPD720100. In May 2009, it launched the world's first USB 3.0 xHCI host controller, the μPD720200, for only four months. After passing the official USB-IF certification and quickly mass production, it was the only USB 3.0 host that had a USB-IF LOGO for up to one year. In July 2010 and March 2011, after the merger, the newly established Renesas also successively released second- and third-generation products.

Although Rex, Texas Instruments, Taiwan's Cheung Sau, and Ichuang have also obtained the official certification of USB-IF after their efforts, Renesas/NEC has already occupied an absolute dominant position in the USB 3.0 master control field. It is difficult to shake the field of notebooks. Perhaps with the arrival of the AMD Llano APU chipset and Intel Ivy Bridge 7 series chipset supporting USB 3.0 natively, it is possible to really challenge the status of Renesas/NEC.
