In three cents, China has one. The Jiangfengyi team of Nanchang University successfully developed the silicon substrate LED technology, making China the third country in the world to master the independent intellectual property rights technology of blue LED after Japan and the United States. This high-tech and successful industrialization won the first prize of the 2015 National Technology Invention Award.

At present, Nanchang is the only city in the world to achieve mass production of silicon substrate LED chips. Based on this, the Jiangxi Provincial Government formulated a plan in 2015 to make Nanchang a national LED light valley and build a R&D, manufacturing and application base for the LED industry chain with international core competitiveness.

"The silicon substrate LED can bypass the international five major LED manufacturers patent alliance, so that the fate of the industry is completely in the hands of the Chinese themselves." Nanchang Mayor Guo An said that "Nanchang Optical Valley" not only stands in the global LED industry's "value chain" "The top, but also the advantages of LED industry chain from epitaxial wafers, chips, packaging, applications, etc.

The industry believes that under the wave of industrial globalization and international mergers and acquisitions, "Nanchang Optical Valley" will be able to reshape the global LED industry if it can seize strategic opportunities.

The model of "double creation" success

A semiconductor light-emitting diode (LED) called the fourth-generation light source is an innovation in the era of green lighting.

As early as 1962, LEDs came out. Formally used as an illumination source, it was a breakthrough made by Japan in 1993. This sapphire substrate LED technology won the 2014 Nobel Prize. In 1995, the United States successfully developed LED technology for silicon carbide substrate and won the 2003 US Presidential Technology Invention Award.

At the beginning of this century, China's LED upstream industry is almost blank, downstream applications have just started, power-type chips are all dependent on imports, and Japanese and American technologies occupy the global market.

In order to seize the opportunities of emerging industries, starting from the "10th Five-Year Plan", the Ministry of Science and Technology took the lead in supporting LED technology and industrial development, and established a national semiconductor lighting engineering coordination leading group to improve the international competitiveness of China's LED technology.

In 1996, in a 40-square-meter laboratory at Nanchang University, Jiang Fengyi began a dream of 600,000 yuan in loans and tracked Japanese technology to make China's LED. Four years later, he successfully produced blue, green, and violet LEDs for sapphire substrates, of which blue LEDs were put into mass production.

China relies entirely on the history of imported LED chips, but Jiang Fengyi quickly fell into new concerns. There are more and more domestic LED downstream companies. It is fatal that the technical patents are in the hands of Japan and the United States, and the industry can be smashed at any time.

Jiang Fengyi is determined not to be the shadow of foreign technology, but to independently seek the path of “China Core”. In 2004, Jiang Fengyi boldly chose the GaN technology route on silicon.

In 2004, after thousands of experiments, silicon-based LEDs made breakthroughs. China broke the monopoly of Japan and the United States and formed a three-pronged global LED technology. At present, its electro-optic conversion efficiency exceeds 60%, and 147 patents have been granted, including 47 international patents.

The "China Core" lying in the laboratory has no life, and real industrialization is international competitiveness. In 2006, Jingneng (Jiangxi) Photoelectric Co., Ltd. came into being, and began the industrialization of silicon substrate LED technology.

In 2009, Jingneng Optoelectronics took the lead in mass production of low-power LED chips on silicon substrates. In 2012, it achieved mass production of high-power LED chips on silicon substrates, which marked the maturity of industrialization of silicon substrate LED technology. The Lighting Alliance listed it as an annual news event. China has occupied two high places of technology and industrialization in the field of silicon substrate LED.

In Nanchang, the industrial cluster of 12 companies has been formed with silicon substrate LED technology as the core, covering the entire industrial chain of epitaxial wafers, chips, packaging and applications. In 2015, the output value exceeded 5 billion yuan.

Industry development faces multiple challenges

The construction goal of “Nanchang Optics Valley” is that by 2020, the main business income of LED industry will exceed 100 billion yuan, accounting for 15% of the country, and the revenue of silicon substrate LED technology will reach 50 billion yuan.

“The luminous efficiency of silicon substrate LED technology is comparable to that of sapphire and silicon carbide substrate LED technology, but the silicon substrate has a price advantage, and it has obvious advantages in the fields of high directionality, such as lamp, tunnel lamp and miner's lamp.” Jiang Fengyi said .

However, compared with the other two technical routes, the silicon substrate LED technology started late, and the industrial development faces multiple challenges.

——The industry scale is small and the market share is low. According to experts, about 85% of the global LED chips are sapphire LED technology; about 13% are silicon carbide LED technology; silicon substrate LED technology is only 1% to 2% due to late start-up and short industrialization practice. market share. In addition, the domestic brand of silicon substrate LED products has not been internationally recognized.

——The market environment is poor, and the vicious competition in the industry is prominent. According to relevant industry sources, the domestic LED market is in disorderly competition. Most enterprises blindly follow the imitation, and are accustomed to fighting prices, scaling, and investing, which is not conducive to the healthy development of innovative enterprises. In addition, administrative barriers still exist in some places. “There are companies and products that have risks in the knowledge industry. Local protectionism has been preserved for a while, but it will never last long.”

——Overseas mergers and acquisitions are blocked, and it is difficult to expand and integrate brands and sales channels.

“We plan to use Jingneng Optoelectronics as the industry acquisition platform for Lumileds, which will greatly enhance the technology and manufacturing capabilities of the domestic LED industry, and may even reshape the global LED industry.” Jinshajiang Venture Capital Co-founder and Managing Director Wu Shenjun said.

-- The pace of catching up with international giants is accelerating, and it is difficult to maintain technological leadership. "The first-mover advantage of China's silicon-based LED technology is facing challenges." Dr. Wang Min, CEO of Jingneng Optoelectronics, said that a large number of LED giants and research institutions such as Puri Light, South Korea's Samsung, LG, and Cambridge University have also "entered" silicon. Substrate LED technology. In 2012, Toshiba invested heavily and acquired the silicon technology division of Purui Company in the United States. It has released the mass production of silicon substrate LED chips three times.

"Nanchang Optical Valley" needs more support

LED lighting is recognized as one of the most promising high-tech.

At present, 80% of the world's LED products are manufactured in China, but the core technologies are in the hands of Japan's Nichia and Toyota Synthetic, the US's Cree, Europe's Philips and Osram.

Wu Shenjun said, "The cross-licensing between the five major manufacturers has formed a strong patent alliance. It is difficult for China's LED companies to circumvent their patents." In 2015, the overall scale of China's semiconductor lighting industry reached 424.5 billion yuan, but domestic LED companies. There is a general lack of core technologies and brands, mostly foundries, and affected by the global economic downturn, with thousands of companies closing down.

The industry believes that the development of the silicon substrate LED technology industry, which will receive the first prize of the National Technology Invention Award, will be upgraded to a national strategy. Supporting the upgrade of the silicon substrate LED technology with independent intellectual property rights and strengthening the industry, can we completely change the current status of China's LED industry. Reshape the global LED industry landscape.

——Incorporating silicon substrate LED technology into the development direction of national key industries. Experts suggest that in the country's "13th Five-Year" industry
