Lenovo President Yang Yuanqing: Looking for the world after PC

Born in China in 1964, he obtained a master's degree in computer science from the University of Science and Technology of China and entered Lenovo in 1989. In 1994, he became the general manager of the PC business. In 2001, he became the CEO and in 2005 he became the chairman. After the Lehman crisis, Lenovo's performance deteriorated. In order to revive the company's performance, it returned to the CEO position in 2009.

Yang Yuanqing acknowledged Lenovo's business pillar - the saturation of the PC market, announced that it will seek new growth points, the goal is to achieve "three in one equipment, interconnection, infrastructure." From the customer's point of view, it shows confidence that it will not lose to Apple and Samsung.

Q: In 2014, Lenovo acquired IBM's low-end server business and Motorola's mobile phone business. What is the purpose?

A: In the past, Lenovo’s main business was personal computers. It has been 10 years since the acquisition of IBM's PC division, and we have topped the global share list in this field, with great success.

On the other hand, the PC market for individuals has indeed entered saturation. We must not rely too much on the PC business to find new growth areas. One of the areas that are now targeted is mobile, and the other is enterprise-level services.

In this way, the acquisition of IBM's server business and the acquisition of Motorola's mobile phone business are in line with Lenovo's development strategy. We hope to use these to create new spaces for development.

Q: Has the effect of the acquisition been revealed?

A: No acquisitions or investments will be immediate. The important thing is to make it fit well into today's business and corporate mechanisms. This will take some time after the acquisition.

Server, mobile, (acquisition shows the effect) is still early. We will slowly build a profitable structure in the future.

Q: From the server to the mobile, the hardware is readily available. Is there any shortage of Lenovo?

A: Hardware is a big advantage. Because we can produce from the terminal of an individual user to the back office of the company. At the production site of the hardware, the commonality of each product can be shared, and cooperation in parts procurement and manufacturing can also be carried out.

The field of development is unlimited. However, what Lenovo lacks now and which field to advance depends on which area of strength and competitiveness is strong. For example, refrigerators and washing machines will have more and more connected products in the future. But this is not an area where Lenovo can be used, so we won't get involved.

Not relying on singles and fighting alone

I have an ideal that all terminals, for every user, can be an extension of their abilities in life.

In order to realize this ideal, our idea is to link terminals with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) to home appliances. We provide a universal module to home appliance manufacturers to create a world that can be more effectively and easily linked to Lenovo's PCs and smartphones.

Q: In other words, have you found a business opportunity from the Internet of Things (IoT)?

A: Recently, people often talk about the Internet of Things, but until now, the value that the Internet of Things can create is still unclear. Although the Internet of Things will create new added value, what is now called the Internet of Things products in the market is still only in the "reconstruction" of products.

I installed an IoT module for one air conditioner in my home, but it was an improvement and modification of air conditioning equipment. If it is not one, but the idea of the Internet of Things is used in more home appliances to create a platform, a large market like smartphones and PCs can emerge.

Q: Lenovo's strength is hardware. Will it operate its own software and services?

A: What we will provide in the future will be the integration of equipment, interconnection and infrastructure. But you don't have to run all of your own.

In the world of the Internet of Things, a company cannot completely monopolize one aspect. We hope to cooperate with home appliance manufacturers to provide customers with the most convenient service.

I also want to emphasize that hardware is just an interface and portal for providing services to customers. We want to use our hardware as a gateway to create a world where customers can enjoy useful services.

Q: In the past 10 years, Lenovo has acquired a number of companies and achieved rapid development. In the next 10 years, is M&A still committed to improving intrinsic value? Where will the focus be placed?

A: The acquisition is a step-by-step strategy, and the subsequent digestion is the most important. Regarding the future M&A, we will need what we need after thinking about the company that was previously acquired and fully integrated into Lenovo.

The acquisition is not to expand the scale, our ultimate goal is to develop. The acquisition cannot be 1 plus 1 equals 2, must be equal to 4, equal to 5 to make sense. First, we want to integrate IBM's server business and Motorola into Lenovo in 2014, which is currently the highest priority.

Don't lose to Apple and Samsung

Q: Regarding the mobile field that will be vigorously developed in the future, what kind of strategy does Lenovo describe in order to pursue the leading Apple and Samsung Electronics?

A: I think Lenovo's advantage is to create an efficient and profitable system. We are very good at achieving a balance of investment. From the point of launching products to the market efficiently and developing production, it should not lose to the two companies.

Lenovo released smart watches, smart shoes, etc. at the first global strategy briefing session "Tech World". These are completely different functions and concepts from those developed by other companies. We will not make the same products as Apple and Samsung. We hope to start a new business with high satisfaction from the customer's point of view.

Q: In the field of smart phones, Lenovo has indicated that it will enter the Japanese market in 2015.

A: Now, the Japanese team is actively preparing for the launch of the product. The plan to launch the Japanese market in 2015 has not changed. But Japan is a special market and there are many preparations that must be made. Brand strategy, partners, communications companies, sellers, etc. are all talking. We are preparing products that will satisfy Japanese customers.

The Japanese market is very important to Lenovo. By leveraging our partnership with NEC, we have built a system that leverages both strengths. Since 2014, NEC's Yonezawa office has started producing ThinkPad. The server acquired from IBM is also planned to be produced in Yonezawa.

For production, economies of scale are important. With competitiveness and scale, it is not impossible to produce a smartphone in Yonezawa. But there is no such benefit at present.

Small team develops new business

Q: In the global IT (information technology) industry, companies are developing new innovation seeds after PCs and smartphones. What new areas does Lenovo intend to develop?

A: Of course, Lenovo is also striving to innovate and create. We have established a number of small teams that are developing new businesses. The concept of the Internet of Things is spreading around the world, and the industry is still not clear about which areas will grow.

Smart doors, smart monitors, robots, and small teams are conducting extensive research on key technologies. Although we are trying to lose business opportunities, there is still no certain development direction.

I am sure that the IT industry in the future will be very different from today. The market is undergoing major changes, and Lenovo will actively invest in resources such as manpower and capital.
