The MAX9867 provides a complete recording path with stereo differential microphone input and stereo single-ended line input. The device supports traditional analog microphones as well as digital microphones, allowing engineers to implement future-proof designs.

To improve audio performance, the device includes a set of programmable digital filters that can be used during recording or playback. This set of filters provides product designers with an easy way to eliminate system noise, such as the GSM packet frequency (217 Hz) on the audio path. The device also allows for custom noise cancellation schemes to improve isolation of noise frequencies. In addition, the headphone amplifier has a complete click/pop suppression circuit that eliminates audible noise during volume changes, power-up or shutdown. This circuit eliminates the expensive bulk capacitors required in previous designs.

As a low-power audio codec, the MAX9867 operates from a single 1.8V supply and features a high-efficiency stereo headphone amplifier that consumes only 6.7mW during stereo audio playback. This low-power feature extends battery life in portable devices while maintaining high-quality audio playback.
