Oculus Home gets social VR support and user-generated content
Social VR features are set to arrive this summer, bringing exciting new ways for users to interact in Oculus Home. One of the most anticipated updates is the ability for Rift owners to upload custom objects using the GLB file format, opening up a world of creativity and personalization.
This means you can now share your unique Oculus Home designs with other users, and even bring your own creations into shared spaces. It's a major step forward for the platform, making it more social and interactive than ever before.
At today’s GDC “Oculus 2018†conference, the company officially announced that the latest version of Oculus Home—released late last year—now includes social VR support and user-generated content features. This marks a big shift in how users engage with the virtual environment.
The social VR functionality is expected to roll out this summer, allowing users to join parties, invite friends, and even launch apps together. Friends will appear as personalized avatars, enhancing the immersive experience. While specific multiplayer features are still under wraps, the potential for collaborative and social interactions is huge.
For the long-awaited Oculus Rift, this update brings a lot of promise, though the full impact remains to be seen. We’ll be keeping a close eye on what’s revealed at the show.
In addition to social features, Oculus has also introduced tools for user-generated content. Rift owners will be able to upload 3D objects in GLB format, and an in-VR tool will simplify the process of importing and placing those items in their Home space. This makes it easier than ever to make your virtual environment truly your own.
