The Ministry of Education and Microsoft have reached a long-term strategic cooperation to develop VR technology application training in the field of teaching
The Ministry of Education's Information Center and Microsoft China have joined forces to promote the application of virtual reality (VR) technology in education, focusing on training programs and lab development. This initiative aims to enhance teaching methods and improve student engagement through immersive learning experiences.
On March 6, 2018, during an event held at Microsoft’s One Innovation Demonstration Center in Beijing, the two organizations announced a nationwide project to implement VR technology in universities and secondary vocational schools. The project will focus on developing new technical skills, building modern educational labs, and integrating emerging technologies like VR, "Internet +", and "Made in China 2025". It also aims to support innovative teaching models that leverage cutting-edge digital tools.
The launch ceremony for the VR laboratory was attended by high-level officials from both the Ministry of Education and Microsoft. Vice Minister Tian Xuejun emphasized the importance of talent development in the context of technological advancement, stating that this collaboration would help cultivate skilled professionals who can meet future industry demands.
Ma Liang, Director of the Information Department Service Department, highlighted the Ministry’s commitment to integrating information technology into education. He mentioned that under the Education Informatization 2.0 initiative, the focus is on improving the digital capabilities of teachers and students, and leveraging enterprise innovations such as VR, AI, big data, and IoT to foster new talent.
Wang Zhengyan, head of IT training, noted that there is a growing shift in IT education from infrastructure to using new technologies to enhance teaching. By partnering with companies like Microsoft, the goal is to bring advanced tools into classrooms and empower educators with the latest knowledge.
Wu Yingce from the China Association of Higher Education emphasized the importance of collaboration between universities and enterprises. The association has established a research branch focused on educational innovation, aiming to create a platform where institutions and tech companies can work together to shape the future of higher education.
Zou Zuoji, Vice President of Microsoft China, stated that the company has always prioritized education and its role in driving national development. With initiatives like "Internet +" and "Made in China 2025", Microsoft believes that skilled professionals in emerging technologies will be key to future success. Through partnerships with the Ministry of Education, the company aims to expand opportunities for innovative teaching and learning using platforms like HoloLens.
The VR training program will include the development of software and hardware environments tailored for educational labs, courseware creation, and on-site training. It will also introduce augmented reality (AR) and explore its potential in real-world applications. Schools will be supported in setting up VR labs and providing teachers with the necessary resources to integrate these technologies into their lessons.
By transforming traditional teaching methods—such as static textbooks and blackboard explanations—into interactive 3D visualizations, the program aims to make learning more engaging and effective. Teachers will gain hands-on experience with Microsoft HoloLens and learn how to apply it in various classroom settings, enhancing both teaching quality and student motivation.
The Ministry of Education will take the lead in organizing and guiding the establishment of VR labs across the country, while Microsoft will provide technical support, course materials, teacher training, and certification programs to ensure the project's success. This partnership represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to transform education and prepare students for the challenges of the digital age.
