The Ministry of Education and Microsoft have reached a long-term strategic cooperation to develop VR technology application training in the field of teaching
The Ministry of Education's Information Center and Microsoft China have joined forces to advance the training and laboratory development of virtual reality (VR) technology in educational settings. This collaboration aims to enhance teaching methods and provide students with more immersive learning experiences.
On March 6, 2018, the Beijing-based Education Management Information Center of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China and Microsoft China announced a nationwide initiative to implement VR technology in universities and secondary vocational schools. The project focuses on developing technical skills, building modern education laboratories, and integrating emerging technologies like VR, "Internet +", and "Made in China 2025" into the education system. It also emphasizes new teaching models that leverage virtual reality for improved learning outcomes.
A launch ceremony was held to mark the establishment of a virtual reality laboratory. During a meeting with Microsoft executives in 2017, Vice Minister Tian Xuejun emphasized the importance of talent development in the context of technological advancements. He stated that this partnership would be based on principles of honesty, pragmatism, innovation, and mutual benefit, aligning with government guidance, enterprise support, and school-enterprise collaboration to cultivate new technical talents.
Ma Liang, Director of the Information Department Service Department at the Ministry of Education, highlighted the commitment to integrating information technology into educational practices. He mentioned that under the Education Informatization 2.0 initiative, the focus will be on enhancing the IT capabilities of teachers and students, and collaborating with leading tech companies to develop "Internet +" talents in fields such as VR, AI, big data, and IoT.
Wang Zhengyan, head of IT training, noted that the demand for IT in education has shifted from infrastructure to using advanced technologies for teaching enhancement. Microsoft and other IT leaders are being partnered with to introduce cutting-edge solutions and drive innovation in education.
Wu Yingce, director of the Business Development Department of the China Association of Higher Education, shared that the association has established an Innovation Collaborative Research Branch to bring together top universities and enterprises like Microsoft and Tencent. This platform aims to explore new pathways for higher education and build a sustainable mechanism for university-industry cooperation.
Zou Zuoji, vice president of Microsoft China, emphasized that the company has always focused on bringing advanced technologies to China to support various industries. With national strategies like "Internet +" and "Made in China 2025" in place, Microsoft believes that mastering new technologies is key to future success. By leveraging its HoloLens platform and working closely with the Ministry of Education, Microsoft aims to expand innovation in education and teaching.
The VR teaching application training project includes setting up software and hardware environments suitable for labs, developing courseware, and providing on-site training. It integrates VR and augmented reality (AR) technologies, offering schools the opportunity to establish multiple VR labs and conduct training sessions. Teachers will gain insights into the latest developments in VR, learn basic theories, and practice Microsoft HoloLens applications. This helps transform traditional two-dimensional teaching into engaging 3D visual experiences, making learning more interactive, dynamic, and effective.
According to the plan, the Ministry of Education's Information Center will coordinate the construction of VR labs across the country, while Microsoft China will support the project by providing resources for lab setup, courseware development, teacher training, and Microsoft certifications. This joint effort aims to foster a more innovative and technologically advanced educational landscape.
