About monitoring: frequency response and personal preferences

Whether a light is placed in the center of the room or against the wall, its color remains consistent. But with speakers, it's completely different. The position of the speaker in the room plays a crucial role in how sound behaves acoustically. Only by placing the speakers correctly and then making adjustments can you achieve a balanced frequency response.
What the speaker is facing in the actual room has a big impact on the sound. Each Genelec speaker is tested and calibrated in an anechoic chamber before shipping to ensure a flat frequency response. However, real-world environments introduce variables like room reflections and placement that affect the sound. That’s why Genelec has included DIP switches on their speakers for decades—allowing users to tailor the sound to their specific space.
Each Genelec speaker comes with a DIP switch (all set to off by default). If all switches are left in the default position, the speaker will have a flat on-axis frequency response in an anechoic chamber or outdoors. But indoors—whether in a normal room or a studio—the frequency response rarely stays flat due to the influence of the environment.
For detailed frequency response information, refer to the operation manual and the measured curves from your specific room setup. The latest Force Monitor series features advanced capabilities through Genelec GLM software, which can automatically measure and calibrate the room's frequency response. This software uses data from thousands of studios worldwide and incorporates research on human hearing perception to deliver a more accurate and balanced monitoring experience.

While a flat frequency response is a useful reference, it may not always be ideal for every type of production or listening scenario—especially when working at high volume levels for extended periods. Personally, I often reduce the high frequencies by 3 dB above 10 kHz, but this is a matter of personal preference and can vary based on room acoustics and listening distance.
You can use the Sound Character Profiler in the Group menu to adjust the high-frequency response. While GLM provides a great starting point, manual fine-tuning after automatic calibration is quick and easy.

In addition to frequency response calibration, GLM also supports level calibration according to broadcasting and film industry standards, delay compensation based on monitoring distances, and overall system delay to ensure perfect synchronization between audio and video.
