21ic News iWatt today introduced the latest LED drivers for LCD TV backlights. The new iW7011 is a 6-channel LED driver with an intelligent digital control engine developed to reduce material costs and simplify edge-lit and direct-lit LCD TVs. Its digital core provides built-in control of DC/DC boost circuits. Accurate LED dimming control and LED driver monitoring and feedback. The device also allows timing delays for dynamic scanning and the same components can be used to simplify designs on 2D and 3D TV applications. The iW7011 integrates many design features to reduce BOM cost. Its built-in boost controller provides a high voltage power supply for the external LED string. The digital control engine allows real-time control of phase delay, is ideal for 3D TV-related phase control, and manages synchronization and error readings for 50Hz-480Hz Vsync signals, eliminating the need for costly microcontrollers. In addition, the iW7011 also supports 85V drain sensing, which means that Cascodes or Zener clamp circuits are no longer needed for protection, while high-voltage drain sensing eliminates the need for external diodes typically required for LED short-circuit error management.

The iW7011's digital control engine improves overall system efficiency by optimizing the DC-DC voltage, primarily based on the minimum feedback voltage of all LED strings and maintaining its nominal current regulation. In addition, the digital control engine generates a current PWM waveform, handles various error conditions, and reports all error messages.

The iW7011 enables high precision of dimming control, supports 14-bit dimming resolution at 120Hz, and supports flexible sink current phase shift dimming in SPI dimming interface or direct PWM dimming mode. In addition, an 8-bit analog controller can be used to increase the dimming resolution, while phase-shift dimming can reduce the capacitance requirements at the input and output to improve dimming linearity and improve electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance. The device supports four phase-shift dimming options: three fixed 6-channel operation options and one adaptive phase shift option. In each option, the displacement is evenly distributed based on the number of active channels.

The iW7011 supports an input voltage range of 10V-28V and LED current up to 300mA. It also provides 2% channel-to-channel matching accuracy and 0.5% absolute current accuracy, resulting in uniform brightness across the LCD display. Its built-in integrated protection features include boost converter over-voltage, over-current, UVLO and over-temperature protection, and support for LED driver open-circuit detection and short-circuit error protection.
