On August 21st, the 18th China Electric Vehicle Academic Annual Meeting was held in Wuhan Dongfeng Motor Company. At the meeting, Chen Quanshi, a professor of automotive engineering at Tsinghua University, gave an in-depth report on the country's policy trends on new energy vehicles, the explosive growth of the new energy vehicle industry, and the current problems and challenges in the development of new energy vehicles. Under the background of the vigorous development of new energy vehicles this year, Chen Quanshi also expressed a certain degree of concern about many problems in the industry. He believes that electric vehicles may enter a trough in the next year.

Will climax again in the second half of the year

According to statistics released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, in the first six months of this year, the cumulative production of new energy vehicles totaled 78,500 units, a three-fold increase over the same period last year. New energy passenger vehicles have achieved gratifying development, with sales reaching 56,700 units, accounting for 72% of the total sales of new energy vehicles in the first half of the year, and accounting for 1.34% of all passenger vehicle sales. "The industrialization of electric vehicles in China is advancing at an unprecedented speed. It seems that we can't describe it with the 'spring of development'." Chen Quanshi said.

The environment for the production and consumption of new energy vehicles is gradually taking shape. From the central to the local, from the government to the enterprises, all aspects of the entire energy chain of the new energy vehicles have initially straightened out the ideas, and everyone wants to go all the way. It has given unprecedented enthusiasm. “Whether it is a complete vehicle, a key component technology, or an infrastructure supporting technology, it has achieved gratifying breakthroughs. Several national standards and industry technical specifications have been issued, which provide a strong guarantee for the healthy development of the industry.” Chen Quanshi said, “ In the first half of this year, the total output of new energy vehicles will increase by a large margin. It will definitely grow faster before the end of the year. It is estimated that the total output will reach 150,000 to 200,000 this year."

The expected number is not unfounded, and the second half of the year has always been the peak season for the production and sales of the automotive industry. At present, it seems that the order tasks received by many manufacturers have not been completed, and dozens of demonstration cities in China must complete the number of task indicators before the end of the year. Therefore, the next upside will be very large. Chen Quanshi said that production and sales in the second half of the year may even double that of the first half of the year.

Technical issues will lead the industry to "diving"

The policy benefits have become the main driver of the current new energy vehicle market, and the rapid growth of production cannot hide the shortcomings of key technologies. At the meeting, Chen Quanshi bluntly talked about the hidden worry in rapid growth. He believes that problems in the field of vehicle integration, lightweight, battery, motor, and electronic control have not been resolved. First of all, the model is basically a modified version of the fuel car. Like Tesla, there are few new models based on the characteristics of electric vehicles. The problems of lightweight, power battery safety and system efficiency are still outstanding. "At present, many localities and enterprises are keen on the whole vehicle project, but the development of key components for electric vehicles is not enough, and they are lagging behind the whole vehicle in terms of industrialization. Many of the new energy vehicles that have been commissioned are from overseas. Key components purchased by multinational companies." Chen Quanshi said.

Secondly, the performance of vehicles with demonstration operations in individual areas has shrunk dramatically. For example, the pure electric taxis in Haikou City were abnormally stopped. These vehicles were put into operation three years ago as the “Ten Cities and Thousand Vehicles” demonstration project. According to the taxi driver in Haikou, the pure electric taxi battery has a small amount of electricity and a large number of power changes. However, Haikou has only one charging station. Under the premise that the battery performance of the vehicle cannot be guaranteed, it should be equipped with sufficient charging and replacement stations. The long queues for changing the electricity made them complain, and they had to consider retiring.

New energy vehicles will once again climax in the second half of the year. Next year, the electric vehicle industry will welcome the first round of trough

In addition, security issues cannot be ignored. By the end of this year, a total of 300,000 new energy vehicles will be on the road. Recently, several new energy vehicle fire accidents in Shenzhen and Xiamen have caused a deep reflection in the industry. "With the rapid growth of the new energy vehicle market, the reliability problems in the use process have begun to appear frequently. How to avoid the safety hazards of new energy vehicles is becoming more and more urgent." Chen Quanshi said.

As we all know, the correct use of the battery is closely related to the storage temperature, depth of charge and discharge, fast charge and overcharge, etc. Overcharging can damage the battery and is also an important cause of fire. The uneven battery level will affect the sustainable development of the entire industry.

The reason for the fire of the "4·26" electric bus in Shenzhen is that after the vehicle's power battery is fully charged, the power battery is overcharged for 72 minutes, and the overcharge is 58kWh, causing multiple battery boxes to have thermal power out of control and electrolyte leakage. A short circuit eventually leads to a fire. According to industry analysts, the deeper reasons behind such fires are the defects in the battery management system control strategy, the imperfect charging system functions, and the lack of attention to monitoring data.

Finally, the power battery technology solution has not yet been determined. Chen Quanshi said that the standardization of battery specifications is exactly what, at present, no one can say. In the selection of battery materials, should the cathode material be lithium iron phosphate, lithium manganate or a ternary material? Can graphene be used on the negative electrode material? And is laser welding or bolting used on the battery grouping route? In the series-parallel mode, is the choice of the first string and vice versa? In addition, in the selection of the drive motor, is it a permanent magnet synchronous motor or an induction motor, is it a high voltage system (300V/560V) or a low voltage system (144V or less)? There is no final conclusion on such issues. "Therefore, after experiencing a substantial increase in production and sales, the future problems will gradually emerge. It is foreseeable that next year will be the low point of new energy vehicle production, and sales are likely to dive sharply, perhaps this year's two-thirds. One." Chen Quanshi said.

Adjustable innovation during the trough

After the explosive growth, it is inevitable to summarize the work of the previous stage and adjust the future development direction. This is in line with the law of development of things, and it must also conform to the development law of China's new energy automobile industry.

Chen Quanshi said at the meeting that during the downturn, the new energy vehicle industry should put the testing and evaluation of vehicles in the first place. "From the demonstration and application of 'Ten Cities and Thousand Vehicles' to the end of this year, there will be 300,000 new energy vehicles. The technical status and level of these vehicles are quite different. After several years of use, they must now be treated like fuel vehicles. Some re-tests and certifies to determine their technical status. Only through vehicle testing can you find out where further improvement is needed."

New energy vehicles will once again climax in the second half of the year. Next year, the electric vehicle industry will welcome the first round of trough

Earlier, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology issued a notice requesting the demonstration city government new energy vehicle work joint conference system to lead the various departments to effectively fulfill their safety supervision duties, strengthen organizational leadership, establish relevant safety hazard investigation and management working groups with relevant departments, formulate specific work plans, and organize Good security risks are investigated and managed. For vehicles that have found problems, they must immediately urge the automobile manufacturers to take improvement measures as soon as possible to eliminate hidden dangers.

At the meeting, Chen Quanshi proposed that not only the demonstration cities should pay attention to the safety performance of vehicles, but also the enterprises should strengthen the testing and evaluation of new energy vehicles. As the main body of product quality, new energy vehicle manufacturers must establish a sense of responsibility for quality and safety. A capable mainframe factory must at least ensure annual inspections like traditional cars, and conduct random inspections of the power performance of the products to ensure safe operation."

While paying attention to safety overhaul, it is also the direction of deep development of enterprises by making good use of the industrial adjustment period of next year to carry out innovation and upgrading of technology and quality. Chen Quanshi said: "China is not lacking in automobile manufacturers. The key is whether it can form its own characteristics, whether it has innovative technology and innovative spirit."

The so-called "the loss of the horse is not a blessing", the trough is a good time for the industry to "sword the sword for ten years." In the future, to break through the bottleneck of industrial technology, we should make great efforts in the research and development of key technologies, and industrialize the transformation of components such as batteries, motors, electric controls and fuel cells to further improve the reliability and durability of vehicle performance. Pay more attention to serialization and standardized design. "Using this opportunity to conduct research evaluation and improvement of technical solutions will be a good opportunity. When the next round of industrial climax comes, we will be better and more sustainable." Chen Quanshi concluded.
