In the bustling environment of the 2017 China Electronics Show (CEF) in Chengdu, a significant event took place: the “2017 China Western Microwave RF Technology Seminar” was successfully held. Hosted by China Electronic Equipment Company and the China Electronic Instrument Industry Association, this seminar brought together industry leaders and experts to explore the future of microwave and RF technologies. Texas Instruments (NASDAQ: TXN), one of the world’s leading semiconductor companies, showcased its latest advancements in millimeter-wave technology at the event. Texas Instruments introduced its new single-chip millimeter-wave CMOS product portfolio, designed to revolutionize sensing capabilities across various industries. Mr. Jiang Hong, Director of Embedded Product Systems and Applications at TI China, attended the seminar and delivered an insightful keynote on “Breakthrough Millimeter Wave Radar Technology.” He highlighted how these advanced sensors are shaping the future of automotive, industrial, and medical applications. The CEF is widely recognized as the most authoritative and longest-running electronics exhibition in China. It serves as a vital platform for companies and professionals to share innovations and trends in electronic technology. This year, TI’s single-chip millimeter-wave sensor portfolio included five solutions spanning two product families—76-81GHz sensors with a comprehensive end-to-end development platform. These products offer unprecedented precision, intelligence, and versatility for use in automotive, factory automation, building systems, and medical fields. Compared to traditional silicon-germanium (SiGe) based sensor technology, TI’s CMOS-based radar sensors provide higher digital and analog integration, along with improved performance in terms of output power, low power consumption, and reduced phase noise. With advanced analog design and digital signal processing, designers can now implement intelligent, contactless sensing in their systems. Mr. Jiang emphasized that high-precision single-chip millimeter-wave products align with global technological trends, supporting a wide range of applications—from automotive radar to industrial automation. These sensors offer a new platform for enhancing the intelligence, safety, and autonomy of vehicles, buildings, factories, and drones. The potential for millimeter-wave sensors is vast, and TI’s product lines, such as the Industrial Millimeter Wave Solutions Series (IWR) and Automotive Millimeter Wave Solutions Series (AWR), are tailored to meet the needs of key markets. During the workshop, TI also demonstrated practical applications of millimeter-wave radar, including short-range detection and monitoring of heart rate and respiration. Using the AWR162 single-chip radar, they were able to detect moving targets within 80 meters and measure respiratory and heart rates by pointing the radar at a person’s chest. The AWR1x and IWR1x series feature small form factors, low power consumption, and high accuracy, making them ideal for ADAS, autonomous driving, and other emerging applications like automatic parking assistance and pedestrian detection. For the past seven years, TI has been pioneering high-frequency CMOS circuits that integrate all functional blocks of a millimeter-wave sensor onto a single chip. This includes RF circuits from 76-81 GHz to advanced sensing processing blocks. Compared to current deployed sensors, TI’s mixed-signal circuits are up to ten times more accurate, and ultra-low-power transistors consume only 25% of the power of existing sensors. As smart infrastructure and Industry 4.0 continue to evolve, the demand for high-performance, efficient sensors is growing. TI is at the forefront of this transformation, enabling developers to push the boundaries of system performance and innovation.
