Most systems use a single crystal to ensure all components operate in sync. However, in certain communication systems, different crystals may be used for baseband and RF frequencies, with synchronization achieved through electronic frequency adjustment. In terms of circuit design, crystal oscillators typically use a three-terminal capacitor configuration (also known as the Colpitts oscillator), as shown in Figure 1a. The actual AC equivalent circuit is illustrated in Figure 1b, where Cv is used to fine-tune the oscillation frequency. This is usually accomplished by using varactor diodes with varying reverse bias voltages, allowing for voltage-controlled frequency adjustments. The frequency is determined by the total tank circuit, which includes capacitors Cbe, Cce, and Cv connected in series, along with Co connected in parallel with C1. As C1 becomes smaller, the influence of Cv on the overall capacitance decreases, resulting in a narrower voltage-controlled frequency range. Since C1 is typically very small (on the order of 1e-15 F), Co cannot be ignored (in the range of 1e-12 F or a few picofarads). Therefore, when Cv increases, the effect on lowering the frequency diminishes, while a decrease in Cv has a more significant impact on raising the frequency. This nonlinearity becomes more pronounced as the voltage control range increases. Additionally, as the feedback voltage (the voltage across Cbe) decreases, the oscillation eventually stops. By understanding the schematic diagram of a crystal oscillator, you can gain a clearer insight into how it operates and the key role it plays in electronic systems. Crystal oscillators with higher harmonic orders tend to have smaller equivalent capacitance C1, resulting in a narrower frequency variation range. Despite this, quartz crystals are known for their stability, even under harsh environmental conditions.
