In a shocking incident in Bangalore, often referred to as India’s “Silicon Valley,†a bizarre fire broke out on the 19th—this time, it was a lake that caught fire. The sight left locals stunned and confused. When firefighters arrived, they were unsure how to tackle the blaze, as the fire was spreading across the water's surface.
Experts believe that years of pollution from nearby factories and residential areas have contributed to this unusual event. A large volume of untreated sewage, including various chemicals, has been dumped into Benandur Lake for years, making it highly flammable. Additionally, invasive species like water hyacinth have also accumulated in the lake, possibly playing a role in the fire.
Residents rushed to the scene, and emergency services quickly responded. However, due to the fire being in the center of the lake, firefighters couldn’t reach it with their equipment. As a result, the Indian military was deployed, sending around 5,000 soldiers to assist in the firefighting efforts. By the night of the 19th, the fire was under control, but smoke could still be seen rising from the lake early the next morning, with firefighters continuing their work.
The Associated Press reported that the fire initially posed a threat to a nearby military zone, but it was eventually contained without affecting the surrounding commercial or residential areas of the city.
Local authorities are now investigating the cause of the fire. The mayor of Bangalore, Sampath Raj, said officials will collect water samples and consult with experts from the Indian Institute of Science to develop strategies to prevent future incidents. This isn't the first time Benandur Lake has caught fire—similar events occurred in May 2015 and February 2017.
Environmental experts have long warned about the growing pollution crisis in the region. The Guardian reported that if the issue isn't addressed, Bangalore could become uninhabitable by 2025. With its reputation as a tech hub, the city faces a critical challenge: balancing rapid development with environmental sustainability.
