As one of the pioneers in China's self-owned brands, Chery hasn't seen the best of times over the past five or six years. It has largely stepped out of the limelight among independent brands. However, despite its recent market challenges, Chery remains well-regarded for its solid reputation in three key areas: quality, reliability, and innovation. Unfortunately, its downfall has been largely attributed to its outdated design philosophy. But at this year’s Beijing Auto Show, Chery introduced a vehicle that grabbed everyone’s attention: the Kaiyi X5, their latest SUV offering. Currently, Chery’s lineup includes two Other SUVs: the smaller Kay Wing X3 and the compact V3. The Kaiyi X5 made its debut as a concept car at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show and has since evolved into a production-ready model. Powered by a 1.5T turbocharged engine alongside a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine, the Kaiyi X5 offers drivers a choice between manual and continuously variable transmissions.
From an aesthetic standpoint, the Kaiyi X5 draws heavily from the concept car’s design while infusing a youthful and sporty vibe. The front end boasts an exaggerated yet modern design, echoing the signature look of the Chery family while incorporating cutting-edge technology. The honeycomb grille and darkened treatment provide a sleek, contemporary appearance, aligning with the latest trends in automotive styling. The overall front design is dynamic, creating a strong visual impact.
On the sides, bold and stylish lines flow seamlessly into the taillights, complemented by chrome accents that enhance the car’s width. The rear design is robust and wide, adding a touch of elegance. With dimensions of 4506mm in length, 1841mm in width, 1740mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2610mm, the Kaiyi X5 shares several specifications with the popular Tiggo 5. The door design reflects a futuristic approach, resonating with the Internet-age appeal that many younger buyers seek.
Inside, the Kaiyi X5 exudes luxury and sophistication. A large, multifunctional steering wheel wrapped in leather offers both comfort and style. The craftsmanship is impeccable, with a premium feel throughout. The interior features a large touchscreen display and a fully touch-operated interface, providing a tech-forward environment. Standard features include the iCar 1.0 intelligent connectivity system, ESP, electronic parking brake, and a panoramic sunroof, ensuring both functionality and convenience.
Under the hood, the suspension system is based on a MacPherson strut setup, with ride height being a notable factor. After adjustments, the car handles road conditions smoothly, offering a comfortable driving experience.
The Kaiyi X5 will be available with two engine options: a 1.5T turbocharged unit producing 112kW and a 2.0L naturally aspirated engine with 102kW. Both engines offer a fuel efficiency of approximately 7.7 liters per 100 kilometers.
In conclusion, the Kaiyi X5 represents Chery’s effort to revitalize its brand image. While it may not single-handedly restore Chery to its former glory, it certainly showcases the company’s potential to innovate and adapt to changing consumer demands. If executed correctly, this model could serve as a stepping stone for Chery to reclaim its position as a leading player in the automotive industry.
