[PConline News] A group of students at the University of Washington found that their classmates needed clumsy braille books to learn, so they came up with a way to change the way that visually impaired people interact with technology. These students founded a company and developed a braille smart watch that is affordable to the public. Wearing this smart watch called Dot, users can view time, read text messages or tweets, and even e-books - but because they can only read 4 characters at a time, they have to read "War and Peace is not practical.

Similar to other smart watches on the market, Dot also needs to pair with a mobile phone via Bluetooth. When the phone receives a text message, the app translates it into Braille and sends it to Dot. As a result, the Dot smartwatch will alert the user by vibrating and then use rugged text to display characters. Dot also includes watches, alarms and reminders. Preliminary tests showed that Dot's single charge can last about 5 days.

The dial of the Dot smart watch consists of 4 cells, each cell has 6 active dots, and 4 characters are generated by rising and falling. The speed of displaying characters on the smart watch display can be adjusted according to the user's reading speed. When Dot does not translate characters, it shows the time.

"Until now, if you receive a message from your girlfriend, you must use Siri to read it to you. But this is very private content." Doet CEO Eric Ju Yoon Kim told Tech in Asia, "You don't want to read it yourself This message, then heard his girlfriend's voice reverberate in the mind?"

In the past, braille readers were usually made of ceramics and were expensive (up to thousands of dollars), so most people couldn't afford it. To overcome this challenge. Dot developed a solution using magnets. Thanks to this innovation and new actuators, Dot's current pre-sale price is only $300.

According to World Health Organization estimates, there are approximately 285 million people with impaired vision throughout the world. The National Association for the Blind said that only 10% of blind people in the country are learning Braille. To improve blind literacy levels, users who wear Dots can also learn to read Braille: This smart watch will include a mobile app that can read Braille that appears on smart watches. Dot is expected to launch in Canada or the United States next year.
