Standard Bluetooth technology is a "connection-oriented" wireless technology with a fixed connection interval, so it is ideal for mobile phones to connect to highly active connections such as wireless headphones. In contrast, Bluetooth low energy technology uses a variable connection time interval, which can be set from a few milliseconds to a few seconds depending on the specific application. In addition, because the BLE technology uses a very fast connection method, it can usually be in a "non-connected" state (saving energy). At this time, the two ends of the link only know each other, only turn on the link when necessary, and then try to The link may be closed in a short time.

The working mode of BLE technology is very suitable for transmitting data from micro wireless sensors (exchanging data every half second) or other peripherals such as remote controllers that use completely asynchronous communication. The amount of data sent by these devices is very small (usually a few bytes), and the number of transmissions is also very small (for example, several times per second to once per minute, or even less).

Two chip architectures of BLE

There are two types of chips in the Bluetooth low energy architecture: single-mode chips and dual-mode chips. The Bluetooth single-mode device is a chip emerging in the Bluetooth specification that only supports Bluetooth low energy technology-it is part of a technology optimized specifically for ULP operation. The Bluetooth single-mode chip can communicate with other single-mode chips and dual-mode chips. At this time, the latter needs to use the Bluetooth low energy technology part of its own architecture to send and receive data (refer to Figure 1). The dual-mode chip can also communicate with standard Bluetooth technology and other dual-mode chips using traditional Bluetooth architecture.

The dual-mode chip can be used in any occasion where a standard Bluetooth chip is currently used. In this way, mobile phones, PCs, personal navigation devices (PND) or other applications with dual-mode chips installed can communicate with all traditional standard Bluetooth devices already in the market and all future Bluetooth low energy devices. However, because these devices are required to perform standard Bluetooth and Bluetooth low energy tasks, the dual-mode chips are not as optimized for ULP operation as single-mode chips.

Single-mode chips can work for a long time (months or even years) with a single button battery (such as 3V, 220mAh CR2032). In contrast, standard Bluetooth technology (and Bluetooth low energy dual-mode devices) usually requires the use of at least two AAA batteries (the amount of electricity is 10 to 12 times that of a button battery and can tolerate a much higher peak current), and in most cases Can only work for a few days or weeks (depending on the specific application). Note that there are also some highly specialized standard Bluetooth devices that can work with batteries that have a lower capacity than AAA batteries.
