With a lot of experience in the development of terrestrial digital TV (DTT) and mobile TV receiver chips, Dickon CEO Yannick Levy suggested that European mobile TV should be considered in conjunction with a new model called "in-band". The model realizes the simultaneous broadcast of two specifications of mobile TV and terrestrial digital TV on the same network in France.

Current status of terrestrial digital TV and mobile TV in France

The conversion of analog to digital in France will be completed later in 2011, and will increase the coverage of outdoor and indoor digital terrestrial television for the first time. Second, by the end of 2011, established broadcasters will realize hundreds of millions of euros in cost savings.

There are already some 20-inch LCD TVs on the market equipped with DVB-T digital tuners, which cost less than 180 euros, which will drive consumers to equip new parts in the home environment, and this precedent already exists in the United States For many years (about 3 TV sets per household), but the DVB-T network is still insufficient to receive digital terrestrial TV signals in a mobile environment. Veteran broadcasters found that they were subjected to intense competition from telecom operators and their large amounts of content, which would lead to a drop in ratings after the analog TV broadcast was closed.

As for mobile TV, the situation is changing dramatically since 2005 due to the development of Wi-Fi. Now, the streaming media applications provided by many content providers provide a good solution for mobile TV applications in indoor environments. Therefore, the demand for indoor coverage of mobile TV is no longer as important as the earliest analysis of the mobile TV market.

Operators, broadcasters and manufacturers no longer believe in the business model of paid mobile TV. Numerous official information from French mobile operators shows that they are unwilling to invest in a pure mobile TV network because the potential 3G network saturation cannot be a reason for investment. These operators tend to end up relying on broadcast 3G solutions such as IMB or waiting for the developing LTE (Long Term Evolution) broadcast solution. The same is true for broadcasters, who will not promise to fund mobile TV networks because the advertising model does not bring enough additional revenue for the business (given the precedent of South Korea).

For chip and mobile phone manufacturers, they no longer believe in the business model of pay-per-view mobile TV. As a result, the scale is small and the possibility of commercial success is very limited. In other countries, mobile TV networks built specifically for mobile TV have never been commercially successful (DVB-H in Italy, Switzerland and Austria, T-DMB in South Korea and Media-Flo in the United States). In contrast, since the ISBT-T standard provides technical possibilities for in-band support, in-band mobile TV networks where digital TV and mobile TV are mixed have been commercially successful, and this model has been adopted in Japan, Brazil and Argentina is constantly evolving.

In-band mobile and fixed TV: a new model

Taking all these factors into consideration, to succeed in France and Europe, it is very important to create a new business model similar to Japan or South America. Dicon believes that digital TV and mobile TV should be integrated in the same network.

In order to achieve this convergence of digital TV and mobile TV, there are two possibilities. The first is to increase the density of digital terrestrial television networks by taking advantage of the cost savings of turning off analog TV in 2011, for example, to achieve DVB-T multiplexing with a more powerful modulation scheme. The second is from 2011, equipped with DVB-T or DVB-SH ground repeaters in suburban areas, and township satellites DVB-SH. In this way, the device can easily receive DVB-T in the UHF band and DVB-SH signals in the UHF band and S band, thereby receiving signals inside and outside the city. Terminals equipped with this chip are now available. In the second case (not earlier than 2014), France may continue the trend of DVB-T2 originating from certain European countries (UK, Sweden, etc.), adopting a way to transmit a high-definition or 3D mode channel Simultaneously transmit low-resolution signals to the mobile receiving terminal. DVB-T2 can fully transmit in-band mobile TV. However, the DVB-NGH standardization organization has not yet completed the exact parameter definition work.

Now, all these factors come together into a single mode, that is, receiving digital TV and mobile TV from a single network facility through the in-band mode, this mode will be very feasible in the short term
