Samsung Electronics announced on October 28 that the proportion of LED backlights in the company's overall TV sales increased from 50% in the second quarter to 55%. Samsung predicted at the beginning of this year that the proportion of LED-backlit TV shipments in 2011 will increase from 20% in 2010 to 51%.
Samsung LED announced on July 19 that the company's joint venture with Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (Samsung Sumitomo LED Materials) will invest 500 billion won ($471 million) in key LED parts by 2015.
Tang Naibin, director of LED lighting for Samsung LED China Business Department, said that Samsung LED Lighting officially entered the Chinese mainland market in early 2011, hoping to become the leading LED lighting market in the mainland in 2013. 
According to foreign media reports, Samsung Electronics said it is considering the merger of its Samsung Motor Co., a joint venture with Samsung Electric, and has yet to make a final decision.
